How to get the most out of winter + celebrate safely

Whether you’re carving through fresh powder on the slopes, revving up a snowmobile on scenic trails, trekking through snowy landscapes on snowshoes, or simply soaking in the crisp winter air—there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the season in our province.

Winter brings adventure, beauty, and plenty of opportunities to gather together.

As you head outdoors and gather with friends this season, keep safety in mind so you can be sure the fun lasts all winter long.

Here are a few tips to help you celebrate responsibly.

Plan Ahead

  • Inform Others of Your Plans: Let someone know your route and expected return time before heading out.
  • Stay Hydrated and Don’t Forget the Snacks: Drink plenty of water and eat a balanced meal before consuming alcohol to stay warm and maintain energy levels.
  • Keep In Mind: A cold beer or cozy cocktail tastes great after the outdoor activities are done, so stick to après-ski for your consumption.

Celebrate Safely

  • Enjoy Responsibly: Choose lower-alcohol beverages or pace yourself with water or non-alcoholic options between drinks (oh hello, mulled cider and hot chocolate!).
  • Stay Sharp: Alcohol can impair judgment and coordination. Stay alert and prioritize safety when enjoying winter events and activities.

Plan for a Safe Ride Home

  • Know Who Your Designated Drivers Are: Whether you are on a snowmobile or in a car, designated drivers are essential to enjoying the season responsibly.
  • Stay the Night: If you’re spending time in rural areas, taxis and public transportation might not be options for getting home safely. Bring a sleeping bag and plan to curl up on a couch or in a spare bedroom for the night. Who doesn’t love a sleepover?

Prioritize Safety

  • Know the Rules of the Trail + Stick to Safe Locations: Alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited in public areas, including provincial parks, Crown land and municipal trails. It also lowers body temperature and impairs reflexes. A cold beer or cozy cocktail tastes great after the outdoor activities are done, so stick to après-ski for your consumption.
  • Stay Warm and Comfortable: Alcohol can mask symptoms of hypothermia, so it’s a good idea to take breaks in warm shelters to avoid extended exposure.

Winter is meant to be enjoyed, and a little planning goes a long way in keeping the season fun and safe. So whether you’re toasting by the fire or hitting the trails, don’t forget to look out for each other, make the most of every winter moment, and of course – celebrate responsibly.
